Volume d'ARENH and 2022

ARENH volume increases by 20 TWh for 2022

“The government has decided to exceptionally increase by 20 TWh (terawatts/hour) the volume of ARENH which will be delivered in 2022, so that all consumers benefit from the competitiveness of the French nuclear power plant. These volumes will be accessible to all consumers, individuals, communities and professionals,” declared theMinistries of Economy, Finance and Recoveryand someEcological transitionin a press release.

The price of these additional ARENH volumes will be revised to €46.2/MWh

This measure is in addition to the various actions taken by the government to mitigate the consequences of the exceptional price increase that we have experienced on the energy market in recent months.

The ARENH system

As a reminder, this mechanism allows alternative energy suppliers to access, from July 1, 2011 and until December 31, 2025, at a fixed price, the electricity produced by EDF's historic nuclear power plants located in the territory national and put into service before December 8, 2010.

The quantities of ARENH contracted by other suppliers cannot exceed 100 TWh per year (excluding the losses incurred by the network operators), which is equivalent to around 25% of the historical production of nuclear power plants.

It was created in 2010 by the law on the new organization of the electricity market (NOME law) and is operational from 2011 to 2025. It is managed by theVSfailure to regulate energy(CRE).

The objectives of the ARENH system

ARENH is a mechanism that obliges EDF to sell part of its electricity production to competing suppliers if they make a request, up to 100 TWh per year so far, around a quarter of the production of 'nuclear energy. Since 2012, the fixed price has been 42 euros per MWh.

How to benefit from ARENH?

To benefit from ARENH, suppliers must submit a request to EDF. The calculation of the rights is then supervised by the CRE, which follows a certain method of allocation. A framework agreement will then be signed between the supplier and EDF, under the aegis of CRE.

What share of ARENH can a company receive?

The amount of ARENH a company can receive is determined by its consumption profile, and more specifically by its consumption during “ARENH” hours. The share of electricity eligible for ARENH can be determined according to this consumption and by applying the calculation procedures described in the texts governing the ARENH system.

The result of this calculation is the “ARENH rate”, which companies can find in their contract. In practice, this rate is generally between 70 and 80% for overall consumption.
